Chapter Ten

Diego winced when Pablo rotated his ankle after he’d completed some of the exercises his lover’d had him do. Pablo glanced up at him from where he crouched next to Diego’s chair.

“Did you do anything besides play volleyball last weekend?”

Shrugging, Diego said, “You know we went out for drinks and to a club. Did a little dancing. Not a lot because I completely suck at it, but a little. The girls like to have an excuse to get dressed up. Sometimes, it can be a little nerve-racking for them to always wear two piece swimsuits while playing.”

Pablo looked confused. “Girls?”

“Yeah. There was a women’s tournament going on at the same time. Doesn’t always happen that way, but the schedule worked out then. Some of them are crazy.” He shook his head. “After Hope and Samantha won the whole thing, they covered our hotel room with toilet paper. I’m not entirely sure how they got inside.” His eyes narrowed as he thought about that. “They probably charmed the bellhop or something. Carlos and I are already plotting our revenge.”

Pablo pursed his lips and Diego could sense his frustration.

“What’s wrong?”

“How is your ankle supposed to heal when you’re out dancing on it then going to the courts to play?” Pablo yanked a bucket over and Diego knew what was coming. “Stick your foot in here. We need to ice it.”

Gritting his teeth, he did it, shivering as Pablo dumped the ice around his ankle.

Pablo looked at him while shaking his head. “I have to go check on my next appointment. You’ll be okay in here, right?”

“What exactly could happen to me here?” He waved his hand to encompass the room. “I’ll be fine. I know I need to soak it for ten minutes then I’ll dry it off and come find you.”

Pablo kissed the top of his head before leaving. Diego relaxed into his chair, letting his eyes close. He thought about the last tournament they’d played in and visualised each play in every match. There were places he and Carlos could improve, so he’d talk to him when they met up later that day for a workout.

A knock sounded and he called out, “Come in.”

“Oh, I thought Pablo was still in here.”

He glanced around to see Thiago peeking in around the edge of the door. “No. He went to check on his next appointment. I’m just soaking my ankle.”

Nodding, Thiago started to pull the door shut, but Diego wanted to see if he could get the guy to talk.

“How are you doing, Thiago? Having a good day?”

They were inane questions, but he couldn’t think of anything more detailed that wouldn’t cause Thiago to run off. Diego wasn’t sure why he wanted to have a conversation with Pablo’s friend. It wasn’t like he was interested in him romantically or anything like that. Maybe it was simply that he felt the man didn’t like him and he wanted Pablo’s family to approve of their relationship.

Diego knew Thiago wasn’t blood related to Pablo, but Diego and Carlos were a prime example of how friends could become family over the years.
